Why I built a Decision Maker into Orbitika: 6 presets and 8 times it helps
Short answer: I built Orbitika's Decision Maker so a group can settle small choices in seconds. Add your options or use one of six presets, tap once, and it picks one at random with equal chances for each. It works without Wi-Fi or mobile data.
Why I built it
Small decisions take up more time than they deserve. Where to eat, what to watch, who goes first, which chore to do before the other. When a group cannot decide, it often takes longer to argue than to do the thing.
I built Orbitika's Decision Maker to end that. Type a few options, tap one button, and it picks for you. I kept it simple on purpose: no account, no sign-in and no internet needed. It is designed to work without Wi-Fi or mobile data, and it fits the retro look of the rest of the app.
What it does
- Add your own options. Type one in, add it to the list, and remove any option with a tap.
- Use a preset. There are six ready to go: Yes / No, Eat / Sleep / Work, Movie / TV / Game / Read, Beach / Mountain / City / Forest, Coffee / Tea / Juice / Water, and Call / Text / Email.
- Tap "Pick one!" The screen shuffles through your options for a moment, then settles on a choice with a tick beside it and a firm buzz.
- Clear everything in one tap and start again.
Every option has the same chance of being chosen, so the result is a fair random pick.
8 times it helps
- Dinner. Put in the three places everyone already agrees on and let the app decide.
- Movie night. Cut the debate between the shortlist.
- Who goes first. Add the names of the people in a game or a queue.
- Chores. Share out the jobs without anyone feeling singled out.
- Weekend plans. Beach, mountain, city or forest, take your pick.
- Gift ideas. Narrow a list of options you like equally.
- Study or work order. When every task feels equally urgent, pick one and start.
- Group trips. A friendly way to settle a tie between destinations.
How to get the most from it
- Only add options you would be happy with. Remove anything you would not accept before you tap, because a random pick is only useful if you honour it.
- Keep the list short. Three to five options is plenty.
- Agree the rule first. With friends, decide that the result stands before anyone taps.
- Notice your reaction. If you feel a little disappointed by the pick, that may tell you what you wanted all along, and you can go with that instead.
What it is not for
The Decision Maker is for small, low-stakes choices. It is not advice and it knows nothing about your situation. Do not use it for important decisions about health, money, safety or other people's wellbeing.
