Why I put a calculator in Orbitika: basic and scientific modes, offline

24 October 2026 · by the developer of Orbitika

Short answer: I built Orbitika's Calculator so people on older phones can have a clear, quick calculator inside one app, with no subscription and no internet needed. It has a Basic mode for everyday sums and a Scientific mode with trigonometry, logs, powers, roots, pi and parentheses.

Why I built it

Almost every phone already has a calculator, so adding another one needs a reason. Mine is simple. I am a solo developer, and I built Orbitika to be one small app that covers the everyday jobs on a phone, so that people do not need a separate app for each one. That matters most on older phones, where every extra app takes storage and memory.

I also wanted the calculator to feel like the rest of Orbitika: retro, easy to read at a glance, and quick to open. The digits are large, the buttons are clear, and each key press gives a small tap of haptic feedback, so you can feel that the press registered. It does not need an account, a subscription or an internet connection, and it is designed to work without Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Two modes, on purpose

I kept it to two modes, because a calculator should not make you hunt for a button.

Basic mode

Basic mode has what most people need every day: the four operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide), decimals, a percent key, a plus/minus key to flip the sign, and a clear key. If you divide by zero, it shows "Error" instead of a confusing number.

Scientific mode

Switch to Scientific and the layout changes. You get sin, cos and tan, a DEG/RAD switch, log and ln, square (x²), cube (x³), square root, cube root, 1/x, the constants pi and e, parentheses and a backspace key. It covers what school, college and most DIY maths ask for.

Who it helps

Tips for getting accurate answers

  1. Check the DEG/RAD switch before any sin, cos or tan calculation.
  2. Use parentheses in longer sums so the order of operations is clear.
  3. Round at the end, not in the middle of a calculation.
  4. Use the backspace key instead of clearing everything when you mistype one digit.

Free and part of a bigger toolbox

The Calculator is one of Orbitika's 24 free everyday tools. Only the emergency tools are part of Orbitika Premium. If you often switch between calculating and converting, you may also like the Converter, which handles length, weight, temperature and storage.

Frequently asked questions

Does Orbitika have a scientific calculator?

Yes. Orbitika's Calculator has a Basic mode and a Scientific mode with sin, cos, tan, log, ln, powers, roots, pi, e and parentheses.

Does the calculator work offline?

Yes. It is designed to work without Wi-Fi or mobile data.

How do I switch between degrees and radians?

In Scientific mode, use the DEG/RAD switch. It shows the mode you are currently in, so check it before using sin, cos or tan.

Is Orbitika's calculator free?

Yes. The Calculator is one of the free everyday tools. Only the emergency tools are part of Orbitika Premium.
